Open-end question

Introduction

Open-end questions let respondents type characters, including letters and numbers, into a text field. There are two types available to be added to your survey:

  • Single-line responses
  • Multi-line responses

Settings

Set character range

In an open-end question, you can designate the number of characters a respondent must enter. When this setting is toggled on, a single-line defaults to a max of 250 characters and a multi-line question defaults to 4,000 characters. These limits can be increased or decreased, as desired.

For example, you could have a question that says, "Please enter your two-digit country code." In the question settings, toggle on the option to define the min & max and set each field to two.

The range settings showing the min and max characters both set to two.

If your question is not required, but you toggle on the range settings and respondents choose to answer the question, they must meet the requirements of the range (the min and max number of character). In the example above, if the question is not required, but a respondent enters a single character, they must either enter an additional character to meet the requirement of two characters or clear the input field to continue to the next question.

Character counter

Toggle this setting if you would like respondents to see how many characters they have typed. If you turned on the range setting, the counter will show characters typed out of the total limit such as: 0/3000.

Set input box width

Only available for single-line

Set the maximum width for the input box where respondents type their responses. This is particularly useful for tailoring the input box size according to the type of information requested. For example, you can make the box smaller for zip code entries and larger for email addresses.

Max width allows elements to expand up to a defined limit. The maximum is either the value entered or the size of the screen. This ensures that larger values will not affect mobile responsiveness.

To ensure you set the desired width, adjust the value and test out the size in live preview by typing in some characters.
